Description
Adult Elephant Hawkmoth, Deilephila elpenor, resting on a grape vine stem. Both moths and caterpillars of this species are large sturdy creatures, the moths being among the best flyers. A hawkmoth is able to hover in the air while sucking nectar from a flower with its long proboscis. Many long tubular flowers depend on this species for pollination since few insects have a sufficiently long proboscis to reach the deep base of the flower. The caterpillars feed on grape vine leaves and on Hypericum plants. The species occurs from Europe to Japan.
