Description
The skeletal remains of pre-Incan mummies who were part of a civilization that lived up to 1,000 years ago were unearthed at an ancient ceremonial site in Lima, Peru. Archeologists said the bodies appear to have been wrapped in textiles and buried in a seated position looking out to sea. The skeletons were part of the ancient Ichma culture that formed following the break-up of the South American Wari Empire before later being absorbed into the Inca Empire. The exact reason for this position is still unclear, but archeologists believe it must have had some ritual significance.
