Saint Jerome translating the bible. Workshop of Willem Vrelant (Flemish, died 1481, active 1454 - 1481); Bruges, Belgium; early 1460s. Tempera colors, gold leaf, and ink on parchment. Jerome (c.? 347 - 420) was a presbyter, confessor, theologian and historian, best known for his translation of most of the Bible into Latin (the translation that became known as the Vulgate), and his commentaries on the Gospels.
