Description
The Red-bellied Snake (Storeria occipitomaculata) is a small species found in a variety of habitats of the eastern half of the United States. When Captured or startled, this snake will curl up its upper lip on both sides. It spends much of its time underground or under logs, rocks, or debris. Red-bellied Snakes primarily feed on earthworms and slugs, but will also prey on insects, snails, and salamanders. Like the Brown Sake, Red-bellied Snakes have teeth and jaws that are specially adapted for extracting snails from their shells.
