Description
Florida Black Bear (Ursus americanus floridanus). Listed as Threatened by Florida and candidate for listing as Endangered by the federal government. Only six major populations are left in Florida in Ocala, Apalachicola, Osceola National Forest, Eglin Air Force Base, Blackwater State Forest and Big Cypress Swamp. There is no hunting season in Florida; the automobile is biggest killer of bears here. Unlike their northern relative, the American Black Bear, the Florida Black Bear does not hibernate, but rather remains active with short periods of sleep. They generally do not create nor use elaborate dens, but use any place available. They will crush down light brush or grasses to use as a makeshift den-like area. They are the largest native land mammal in Florida. Their diet is 80% vegetable matter, including berries, acorns, insects, and palmetto hearts. Occasionaly they will eat armadillos and carrion. No human has ever been killed by a Florida Black Bear. Osceola National Forest, Florida.
