Description
The Copperhead, Agkistrodon contortrix, inhabits the Midwest and eastern portions of the United States and a region of Mexico. These snakes have a color and pattern that lend to blending in with leaf litter. The cryptic nature of these snakes can make them difficult to see on the forest floor. These pitvipers are live bearing. Young have bright yellow tail tips which they wriggle around in front of their bodies, used to draw in small reptiles which they eat. This individual was photographed in Oklahoma, Delaware Co., 2019.
