Description
A knight forced to take flight - Hugh de Boves at the battle of Bouvines. The Battle of Bouvines was fought on July 27, 1214. It was the concluding battle of the Anglo-French War of 1213-14. A French army of approximately 7,000 men commanded by King Philip Augustus defeated an Allied army of approximately 9,000 commanded by Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV. The Chronica Majora has long been considered a contemporary attempt to present a universal history of the world. The Chronica is the seminal work of Matthew Paris, a member of the English Benedictine community of St Albans and celebrated historian. (cropped and cleaned)
