Description
The scales covering the wings of most butterflies give the wings their colors, either by pigmentation or by the surface sculpturing that can be seen on several levels in this micrograph. The ridges produce metallic-looking colors by diffraction, while other colors are made when blood cells dry within these structures during development. Patterns are created by the arrangements of scales. (Painted Lady butterfly) SEM x 1200.
