Description
This color enhanced axial (cross sectional) contrast enhanced CT through the chest in a subject with severe acute chest pain demonstrates a large filling defect (aqua) in the proximal right (on your left) pulmonary artery (purple). This represents a large blood clot which usually travels from the deep veins in the legs but can arise from other sites. It either breaks up into smaller pieces and flows further into smaller pulmonary arteries or may stay centrally as in this case. This is a very serious condition and can lead to sudden abrupt death. Patients are treated with placement of a metal filter in the inferior vena cava (IVC) which catches the blood clots in the upper abdomen before they reach the chest and/or are given blood thinners like Coumadin to prevent the formation of these blood clots. The ascending and descending thoracic aorta are red and a left pulmonary vein is blue.
