Description
Engraving of Euterpe, Greek Muse of Music, from a series entitled The Nine Muses (plate 6) by Hendrik Goltzius, 1592. In Greek mythology, Euterpe was called the "Giver of delight", when later poets assigned roles to each of the Muses, she was the Muse of music. In late Classical times she was named Muse of lyric poetry and depicted holding a flute. She is the daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne. Her sisters include Calliope (muse of epic poetry), Melpomene (muse of tragedy), Terpsichore (muse of dancing), Clio (muse of history), Erato (muse of erotic poetry), Thalia (muse of comedy), Polyhymnia (muse of hymns), and Urania (muse of astronomy).
