Flea. Humans can contract plague, Y. pestis, when bitten by a rodent flea that is carrying the plague bacterium, or by handling an infected animal. "Murine" typhus, due to Rickettsia typhi bacteria, can also be transmitted by rodent fleas to man.....Fleas Four life stages, wingless, sucking mouth parts as adults, flattened from side to side, suck blood, good jumpers...Dogs, cats and rodents are commonly bitten by fleas and often these same kinds of fleas bite people. A few cases of plague, a very serious disease in man, are caused nearly every year in the United States by bites of wild rodent fleas. Domestic rat fleas also spread murine typhus, a disease still known in the southern and southwestern states, particularly Texas...1972
