Description
Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of HTLV III (red dots). Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type III (HTLV-III), later renamed HIV-1, is the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immunodificiency syndrome). HTLV III infection results only from contamination of the host's blood stream with infected secretions. This can occur during sex, birth, when contaminated blood products are transfused, or when using a contaminated needle.
