Description
Stream waterfall surrounded by trees and moss. Cascade waterfall in a stream surrounded by trees and moss. A waterfall is formed when flowing water erodes soft, underlying rock or crosses a fault. The position of a waterfall will gradually move upstream due to erosion at the lip of the fall and undercutting at the foot of the fall. The rate of movement depends upon the hardness of the rock. As the waterfall ages, it gradually loses its height until it becomes a series of rapids. Eventually even these disappear completely. Photographed in Mount Jefferson National Forest, Oregon, USA.
