Description
An Ornate Hopper (Family Fulgoridae) nymph. This species may mimic a predatory fungus. Species of fungus of the genus Cordyceps kill insects and then sprout fruiting bodies from their bodies to spread their spores. The fruiting bodies often times look like white fuzz or hair emerging from the insect. Predatory insects will avoid these corpses, presumably knowing that they could be infected with the fungus if they get too close. In turn, predatory insects avoid the several insects that mimic Cordyceps fungus, with hair-like structures emerging from their bodies, as if they were infected. This species was photographed in Amazonian Peru in 2010.
