Description
Quagga Mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) held in hand for scale. Quagga mussels are a freshwater species of bivalve mollusk indigenous to the Dnieper River in Ukraine. It is an invasive species in lakes and rivers of North America, with particular concern in the Great Lakes region. Like Zebra Mussels (Dreissena polymorpha), they are prolific breeders, and their colonies can clog and corrode water pipes. They filter phytoplankton from the water they inhabit, rendering the environment poor in nutrients for the rest of the food chain.
