Description
Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of HIV virus budding from a lymphocyte. HIV, Human Immunodeficiency virus, is spread through intimate contact with an infected person (sexual contact, shared intravenous needles). HIV invades the lymphocyte cells of the immune system, and reprograms the cells to produce HIV. As the number of lymphocytes in the body dwindles, the bodies' immune system is destroyed, and AIDS develops. Without lymphocytes, AIDS patients have little defense against opportunistic infection.
