Description
Illustrated view of the entire human circulatory system showing the arteries (red) and the veins (blue). The arteries carry oxygenated blood (except the pulmonary arteries which carry deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs) while the veins carry deoxygenated blood (except the pulmonary veins which carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart). Blood flow also passes through the kidneys where waste products are removed from the system and through the abdominal area where nutrients are picked up from the digestive system. On the right side of this image is an enlarged illustration of the major structures of the heart. On the left side of this image is a basic illustration of capillaries structure. Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in the body, sometimes only allowing a single cell to pass through at a time, and are where nutrients are dropped off to tissues and where waste products are picked up.
