Description
Illustrated mid-line cross sectional view of the human brain. This view shows the cerebral hemispheres (larger structure at top), the cerebellum (smaller structure below cerebral hemispheres and towards the back of the head) and the brain stem (think stalk-like structure below cerebral hemispheres and anterior to cerebellum). The diencephalon forms the central core of the forebrain and is surrounded by the cerebral hemispheres. It consists mainly of three bilaterally symmetric structures - the thalamus, hypothalamus, and epithalamus - which collectively enclose and form the boundaries of the third ventricle.
