Color enhanced transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Neisseria gonorrhea, a gram-negative bacterium, and the causative agent of gonorrhea. Gonorrhea is the most common reportable communicable disease in the United States. A contagious inflammation of the genital mucous membranes, gonorrhea may also affect the heart, oral mucosa, rectum, or joints. In the female, the urethra, vulva, vagina, and fallopian tubes are affected. In the male, a yellow micro purulent discharge from the penis results from the inflammation of the urethra. This can affect the prostrate, causing painful urination. Gonorrhea may be treated with penicillin. 7,000x at 35mm
