Description
SEM Botany Gymnosperm (Welwischia mirabilis) This plant, from the foggy, desert wastelands of SW Africa and Angola, consists of a short bulbous trunk and 2m long, ribbon-shaped leaves. The leaves spread out on the ground and die back from the ends. They apparently employ wind dispersal pollination. Welwitschia are the only gymnosperms that process CO2 by dark reactions during the night. Magnification = 50x
