Description
A Wistar rat, a popular strain (in rodents, a group in which all members are genetically identical) of albino rat belonging to the species Rattus norvegicus. The strain was developed at the Wistar Institute in 1906 and is notable for being the first rat strain to serve as a model organism. More than half of all laboratory rat strains are descended from the original colony. This rat was photographed at the Agricultural Research Center of Beltsville, Maryland on February 5, 1969.
