Description
Histopathology of Naegleria fowleri amoeba infection of brain. Note the empty spaces between cells where the amoeba have digested brain tissue. This organism causes meningoencephalitis when inhaled, often by swimming in fresh water. Headaches, vomiting, sensory disturbance and a fatal coma may occur if the victim is not treated.
