Description
Bush or leaf katydids are common in the upper Amazon Basin's wet forests. This is an adult. These insects, relatives of the common grasshopper, are famous for their camouflage. They mimic leaves with amazing details like "leaf veins" and moldy leaf holes. Should their disguise fail, they have a backup plan. They spread their wings and reveal eye spots. Science thinks the spots are supposed to represent a larger predator's eyes, which would hopefully scare off any real predators. This bush cricket was encountered on a night hike along the Madre de Dios, Peru.
