Description
Dragonfish are among the most fierce of the deep sea dwellers in appearance. This species, Neostomias filifer, has a lure, a luminous organ attached to the end of a rod like barbel, which is attached to the lower jaw. In theory, the dragonfish wiggles the glowing lure to attract prey. Anything of appropriate size that comes within striking distance is dinner. This dragonfish was roughly a seven inches in total length and was trawled from between the surface and 500 meters depth.
