Description
Lithograph entitled "Terrific combat between the Monitor 2 guns & Merrimac 10 guns." The Monitor and the Merrimac were two warships belonging to the North and South respectively. The confrontation was part of the Battle of Hampton Roads, a two-day effort by the Confederacy to break the Union blockade. It was the first meeting in combat of ironclad warships. They fought for about three hours, with neither being able to inflict significant damage on the other. The duel ended indecisively, with the Merrimac returning to her home at the Gosport Navy Yard for repairs and strengthening, and Monitor to her station defending Minnesota. The ships did not fight again, and the blockade remained in place.
