Description
Illustration of the battle between the ironclad warships Monitor and Merrimac; also shows a different Union ship sinking and rescue boats being put to sea from shore, as well as a Union artillery bunker, Union soldiers and officers, and some rescued sailors. The confrontation was part of the Battle of Hampton Roads, a two-day effort by the Confederacy to break the Union blockade. It was the first meeting in combat of ironclad warships. They fought for about three hours, with neither being able to inflict significant damage on the other. The duel ended indecisively, with the Merrimac returning to her home at the Gosport Navy Yard for repairs and strengthening, and Monitor to her station defending Minnesota. The ships did not fight again, and the blockade remained in place.
