Description
King of Kongo Receiving Dutch Ambassadors, 1642. The dynasty of the Kingdom of Kongo goes back to more than 500 years (1400-1914), and its traditional territory is the Atlantic coast and moderate interior of the present Democratic Republic of Congo & Northern Angola. It was from N'Gola (Angola) and the Kongo that the Portuguese New World was to derive its greatest source of slaves. By the 1600s the Dutch were competing with the Portuguese for the spice trade, and they captured Luanda from the Portuguese in 1641. In 1642, Kongo agreed to provide them with military assistance, and in return the Dutch helped the King of Kongo put down a rebellion in the south.
