Description
Rubella viruses. Colored Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of rubella viruses, the causative agent of German measles. This section through several viruses was isolated from a human blood cell. Individual viruses have a blue core of genetic material (RNA) enclosed in a red colored capsid coat made of lipoproteins. Rubella viruses belong to the togavirus group and are transmitted through air-born droplets. German measles causes a mild rash upon infection. However, the disease is particularly harmful to unborn babies in the first 4 months of pregnancy. Rubella vaccine is now routinely used as an inoculum.
