Description
Microsporum fungus. SEM of the fungus Microsporum gypseum which causes ringworm on the scalp and body. It is one of several dermatophyte fungal species that infect humans. The cylindrical spore-producing structures (macroconidia) are seen connected by hyphal filaments. M. gypseum is found in the soil. Gardener's hands can become infected, as well as the underarms. It also causes ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitus) giving rise to round scaly lesions with hair loss, mainly in children. It is spread by contact with fungal spores.
