Description
Amazonian River Turtles, Podocnemis ssp., are diurnal (day active); however, their eggs develop below ground in the darkness of subterranean nests whereafter the hatchlings dig and crawl out of the nests before heading to the river's edge. These turtles enact much the same nesting behavior as their marine cousins by crawling out onto sandy beaches in mass to dig nests, lay eggs, and cover the eggs back over with sand before returning to the water. This seasonal resource (turtle eggs) has many predators, not the least of which are humans. This is the largest of the Amazon River Turtles, Podocnemis expansa. It was photographed in Loreto, Peru, in 2013.
