Description
Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing high-grade synthetic spun fibers applied to a nylone network by means of an electrospin method. With this method, very fine fabrics can be produced. The silk was obtained from bacteria which produce spider silk protein after gene transfer. These spun yarns are light and water resistant, but still have a high water absorption capacity comparable to that of wool. They resist microbiological attacks and are nevertheless biodegradable. The aim is to use the spider silk for medical purposes. The sample is taken from the University of Regensburg, Chair of Biomaterials. Magnification 10001 (at 15x12 cm image size).
