Description
E. coli bacterium. Colored transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through an Escherichia coli bacterium. This rod-shaped Gram- negative bacterium moves using its hair-like flagellae (yellow). It is an enterobacter, a normal usually harmless inhabitant of human and animal intestines. Under certain conditions however, it may increase in number and cause infection. Types of E. coli are responsible for gastroenteritis in children, particularly in tropical countries. In adults it is the cause of 'travellers' diarrhoea' and of most urinary tract infections. This is the K12 strain. Negatively stained. Magnification x12,500 at 6x7cm size. Magnification x6250 at 35mm size.
