Description
Horsefly. Colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a horsefly or gadfly, family Tabanidae. One of the fly's wings can be seen at lower center below its large compound eyes (green). The females of the species are blood-sucking parasites with piercing mouthparts (red), while the males feed on nectar and pollen from flowers. The female's bite is very painful, and the wound can bleed for some time because the horsefly saliva prevents blood from clotting. Horseflies are found all over the world and transmit some blood-born diseases. Magnification x36 at 5x7cm size.
