Description
Volvox tertius, living. Volvox is a colonial member of the Protoctista found as a member of the plankton in freshwater ponds and lakes. It consists of a hollow ball of several thousand cells, each with a chloroplast and a pair of flagella. It reproduces asexually by budding off daughter colonies (8 here) which slowly rotate in the interior until they escape. Rheinberg Illumination. Horizontal Field Width = 125 micrometers.
