Description
Ethel Waters (October 31, 1896 - September 1, 1977) was an African-American blues, jazz and gospel vocalist and actress. She frequently performed jazz, big band, and pop music, on the Broadway stage and in concerts. She was the second African-American, after Hattie McDaniel, to be nominated for an Academy Award, and the first black woman to be nominated for an Emmy Award. Recordings of Ethel Waters were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, to honor recordings that are at least 25 years old, and that have qualitative or historical significance. In 2003, her recording of "Stormy Weather" was listed in the National Recording Registry. Carl Van Vechten, August 28, 1938.
