Description
Cross-section through an FFP2 mask (filtering face piece). In Europe, an FFP2 mask is defined by 95% protection for harmful dusts, mist and smoke; filters for solid and liquid particles; and against harmful substances up to 10 times the maximum permissible workplace concentration. The outer layers on top of this mask are made of two different stable spunbond fabrics that give the mask stability. Then follow 5 layers of very fine meltblown fabric (usually made of polypropylene). The layers can be electrostatically charged so that particles adhere better to the tissue. The last layer at the bottom again is made by a tougher spunbond fabric. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people were advised to wear such masks when coming in contact with other people. Scanning electron micrograph, magnification 28x (at 15 cm image width).
