This natural-color satellite image of a part of Greenland's northwest coast was acquired on July 30, 2019 by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8. July 2019 saw a major melting event across the Greenland Ice Sheet provoked by a bubble of warm air that had previously delivered unseasonably warm temperatures to Europe. Billions of tons of meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet streamed into the Atlantic Ocean throughout the month, making a direct and immediate contribution to sea level rise.
