Description
Mishima Pass in Kai Province is a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. The thirty-third print in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Shows travelers resting beneath a large tree near the Mishima station on the Tokaido Road. Mount Fuji is a frequent subject of Japanese art especially after 1600, when Edo (Tokyo) became the capital and people saw the mountain while traveling on the Tokaido road. Mount Fuji is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains". The ukiyo-e genre of art flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries.
