Artist's Description

Illustration of radioimmunotherapy used to treat pancreatic cancer. A radioactive isotope (lead-212) is combined with a specific antibody capable of targeting cancerous cells. This combination of antibody and lead-212 radioisotope is injected intravenously into the body until it reaches the pancreas where it locks onto the cancerous cells' antigen. The lead destroys the cells by irradiating them. This treatment limits the toxicity on healthy cells located near the cancerous cells.
