Description
Historic Route 66 Neon Sign in northwestern Arizona. U.S. Route 66, also known as the Will Rogers Highway, "Main Street of America", and the "Mother Road," was one of the original U.S. highways, established in 1926. It originally ran from Chicago through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, ending at Los Angeles. U.S. 66 was removed from the U.S. Highway System in 1985, after being replaced by the Interstate Highway System. Portions of the road that passed through Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, and Arizona have been designated a National Scenic Byway, named "Historic Route 66."
