Description
The Siege of Port Hudson (May 22 - July 9, 1863) was the final engagement in the Union campaign to recapture the Mississippi River in the American Civil War. Farragut was accepted for the major role of attacking New Orleans. After two days of heavy bombardment, Farragut ran past forts Jackson and St. Philip and the Chalmette batteries to take the city and port of New Orleans on April 29, a decisive event in the war. Congress honored him by creating the rank of rear admiral on July 16, 1862, a rank never before used in the USN. Chromolithograph by L. Prang & Company (cropped and cleaned).
