Description
Scanning electron micrograph of a molar tooth with thick plaque. To make the plaque visible, the tooth was shock-frozen and broken. On the bottom, in light gray, the enamel can be seen. Above it, embedded in a bacteria-made polysaccharide matrix (with proteins, carbohydrates, phosphates) various oral bacteria can be seen in different colors. The green-colored bacteria could be Streptococcus mutans. Plaque can lead to dental caries, periodontitis and gingivitis. When bacteria surround themselves with a protective mantle like this, it's called a biofilm. Magnification: 11000x (at 15cm image width).
