Josephine Baker (June 3, 1906 - April 12, 1975) was an American entertainer. Fluent in both English and French, she became an international musical and political icon. She became a citizen of France in 1937, assisted the French Resistance during WWII, and was the first American woman to receive the Croix de guerre. On April 8, 1975, Baker starred in a retrospective revue in Paris celebrating her 50 years in show business. Four days later, she was found lying peacefully in bed surrounded by newspapers with glowing reviews of her performance. No photographer credited, undated (cropped and cleaned).
