A fingerprint with ID grid supered, with hand and social security numbers surrounded by a white background. The ridged pattern of the skin on a person's fingertips is constant throughout life and no two fingerprints are exactly alike. Fingerprinting was first used as a means of identifying crime suspects in India, and it was adopted by the English police in 1901. It is now widely employed in police and security work.
