Artist's Description

An enema apparatus that uses tobacco smoke. A tobacco smoke clyster or enema is the insufflation of tobacco smoke into the rectum. It was used by indigenous North Americans to stimulate respiration and was later adopted by Europeans. Etching from "La Presse medicale," 1903. Color enhanced.
