Artist's Description

An engraving of the Challenger's scientific expedition laboratory. This engraving shows the work benches, microscopes, bottle racks and bird skins hung up to dry. The 'dirty' work associated with the net catches when they first come aboard was mostly done on deck or in a shed which was built at the aft end of the main deck. When the ship reached warm latitudes the drying bird skins were also hung in this shed because the smell below decks was otherwise intolerable. The Challenger expedition was a scientific exercise that made many discoveries to lay the foundation of oceanography.
