Description
Color enhanced scanning electron microscope image of breast cancer cells (adenocarcinoma) of the line MDA-MB-231. On the cancer cell sits a chimera antigen receptor cell (beige) which has already triggered apoptosis (blisters) in the cancer cell. CAR cells are used for immunotherapy against cancer. In this form of immunotherapy, T cells are obtained from the patient's blood and are modified by viral vectors to additionally express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) recognizing a specific tumor antigen. After the multiplication of these CAR-expressing T cells in vitro, they are transfused back into the patient and can directly detect the cancer cells carrying the antigen. If the CAR-T cell binds to a tumor cell, the CAR-T cell is activated and appropriate immune defense is initiated. Magnification is 3670x at 10 cm wide.
