Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the cherry vinegar fly (Drosophila suzukii), a species of the family Drosophila (Drosophilidae) and thus closely related to Drosophila melanogaster. Originally based in Southeast Asia, it has now been spread by the international fruit trade to the whole northern hemisphere. In 2009, it was first detected in southern Europe. It mainly affects berries and stone fruit. The female has a long, sharp-toothed oviposition apparatus (image). With this, she scrapes the fruit, puts eggs in it, and damages immature fruits. In optimal conditions (around 25°C) the generation cycle is only 9-11 days. Magnification is 500x at 15x12cm.
