Artist's Description

The coronaviruses derive their name from their crown (corona) of surface proteins (blue), which they use to attach and penetrate their host cells. Once inside the cells, the particles use the cells' machinery to make more copies of the virus. Coronaviruses produce respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases in humans and animals. About 25% of banal respiratory diseases in humans are caused by coronaviruses. The novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), like the SARS virus, belongs to the beta-coronaviruses. Infections with the coronavirus cause high fever, difficulty breathing, coughing, pneumonia. Transmission electron micrograph. Magnification 150,000x (when 15cm wide).
