Ida B. Wells (July 16, 1862 - March 25, 1931) was an American journalist, suffragist a leader of the anti-lynching campaign and founder member of the NAACP. In 1884, she was forcibly removed from her seat for refusing to move to a colored car on the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. She sued the railroad for violating her civil rights and won her case when the local circuit court granted her a settlement of $500. The case was taken to the Tennessee Supreme Court where it was rejected in 1887. Wells traveled nationally and internationally on lecture tours. In 2020, she was posthumously honored with a Pulitzer Prize. The Story of the Illinois Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, 1900-1922 (cropped and cleaned).
